A Massachusetts man was discovered dead inside the apartment he was renting in Colombia, authorities said Tuesday.
The body of Nicolas Flattes, 56, was in a state of decomposition when concerned neighbors entered the fifth-floor apartment in the southwestern Medellín town of Belen on Monday afternoon.
The residents found him lying on his bed and immediately alerted the police, local outlets reported.
Flattes’ body did not show any signs of violence, according to investigators with the Attorney General’s Office. An autopsy that will determine the cause of death is pending.
Flattes had been renting the home since September 22, his friends said.
They became increasingly worried after they had not seen him since the middle of last week.
Calls to his cellphone number went unanswered, which led the neighbors to visit the home Monday before they made the terrifying discovery.
The death is of major concern to Colombian authorities, who have registered 22 deaths of foreign tourists in the Aburrá Valley in 2022.
On February 10, a 48-year-old Canadian man was found dead at a hotel in the Medellín neighborhood of Laureles.
On January 5, Leon Victor Dean, 59, of the United Kingdom, was discovered dead in his hotel room's jacuzzi in the neighborhood of El Poblado.
Flattes was a resident of Springfield, Massachusetts, and an avid traveler who documented his trips on Facebook.
He had previously visited Colombia between 2018 and 2021 and also traveled to Mexico and Brazil.
